What Forest gets right
Forest made focus charming. Plant a tree, leave the phone alone, watch it grow; break early and it dies. For timed deep-work sessions, especially with a friend planting alongside you, it's still one of the nicest rituals in the category. (Disclosure: Broc is our app; this page is for the people the ritual stopped holding.)
The two structural limits
1. The stake is imaginary
Gamified consequences work exactly as long as you care about the game. The first dead tree hurts. By the fortieth, you've learned the only lesson that matters: nothing actually happens. Your brain files the tree under "decoration," and decoration doesn't beat a TikTok craving at 11pm.
2. It's session-shaped
Forest asks you to declare a focus session, which is great for a study block and useless for the ambient problem: the 40 daily autopilot opens between sessions. An always-on problem needs an always-on deal.
Replacing the tree with something real
The fix isn't a scarier animation. It's a stake that exists outside the game:
- Your streak. In Broc, every day your habits get done, a visible streak grows. It's not a pixel pet; it's a record of three real weeks. Deleting that over one scroll is a genuinely hard decision, which is the point. More on the mechanism in why you bypass every blocker.
- Your actual day. Broc's wall stays up until real habits happen: read, train, clean, study, proven by an AI photo check or an in-app timer. The reward for finishing isn't a tree; it's the scroll itself, earned.
- Always-on, not session-shaped. The block is the default state of your distracting apps, every day, with no session to remember to start.
The field, briefly
| App | Shape | The stake |
|---|---|---|
| Forest | Focus sessions | A virtual tree |
| ScreenZen | Always-on pauses | None; it's friction |
| Stay Focused | Schedules and limits | None; it's a timer |
| Broc | Always-on habit gate | Your streak and your unlocked minutes |

Common questions
Can I keep Forest for deep work and add Broc?
Yes, and it's a good combination: Forest for declared sessions, Broc holding the wall the other 23 hours. They don't conflict.
What does Broc cost?
Broc is a subscription with a 7-day free trial. One plan, everything in: unlimited habits, custom unlock durations, AI photo verification and full history. No ads.
Does Broc have anything growing?
A badger guards your wall, and your streaks and four-week grids grow with every day you follow through. The difference from a tree: they're a record of things that actually happened.
