Opal alternatives for Android, compared honestly

Opal earned its reputation on iPhone. If you're on Android, here's how the real options stack up, ranked by the question that matters: how hard is it to bypass?

First, the honest bit about Opal

Opal does exist on Android. But the app that built the brand, the one the press covered and the testimonials rave about, is the iOS version. The Android release is newer and Opal's own help says some iOS features are not yet available on Android. If you searched for an alternative, you may have noticed the gap. This page is a disclosure too: Broc is our app, and it's in the list. We've kept the comparison factual so it's useful even if you pick something else.

Which one fits you

You want gentle friction and zero cost: ScreenZen

The best free option here. Pauses, mindful prompts, per-app schedules. If your problem is mild autopilot opening, gentle friction may be all you need. If you've ever clicked through a prompt without reading it, you already know the limit of prompts.

You saw Unrot on TikTok, but you're on Android

Unrot's habit app uses earned screen time on iPhone: habits earn coins through timers or photo snaps, coins unlock your apps, and a little buddy grows when you follow through. Its official site currently links only to the App Store. A separate product that used the Unrot name links to an Android app now called Untap, with a different developer and mechanic. On Android, Broc offers the habit-gated approach: habits verified by photo or timer, apps locked until they're done.

You want an Android unlock tied to habits: Broc

Broc treats screen time as something you earn with your real habits. Block Instagram, TikTok, YouTube; set the day's habits; each one unlocks minutes. The wall has no snooze button, and AI photo verification checks the open book or the gym before a habit counts, so ticking the box from bed doesn't work. It's a habit app blocker: strictness tied to your goals, not to a clock.

Rule of thumb: prompts fix accidental opens. Timers fix mild overuse. If you keep bypassing your own rules, you need the unlock tied to something real: your actual habits (Broc).

What about Opal itself?

If you're deep in the Apple ecosystem, Opal on iPhone remains a polished choice with focus sessions and app-difficulty levels. On Android, judge the Android app on its own merits, not the iOS reviews: check the recent Play Store ratings before subscribing.

Common questions

Why trust a comparison written by one of the apps?

Fair question. The mechanics and prices above are stated plainly so you can verify each one on the Play Store in two minutes. Broc wins on exactly one axis, strictness tied to real habits, and we've said where the others win.

What does Broc cost?

Broc is a subscription with a 7-day free trial. One plan, everything in: unlimited habits, custom unlock durations, AI photo verification and full history. No ads.

Can any of these survive being uninstalled?

Broc does not prevent uninstall. Some Android device-management modes and strict blockers can restrict uninstalling or settings changes, but those protections vary. Broc instead makes quitting visible through your streak.
