Block apps until you work out

You've scrolled through three gym sessions this week from the sofa. Here's the setup where the feed physically waits for the workout.

The problem with "I'll go after one video"

The workout and the scroll compete for the same time slot, and the scroll starts with an unfair advantage: it's already in your hand. Every "just one video" is a negotiation, and the sofa wins negotiations. Fitness apps try to fix this with reminders, which are just more notifications to swipe away between Reels.

The fix is refusing the contest: the scroll doesn't compete with the workout, it pays for it. No workout, no feed. Suddenly the sofa is the boring option.

The setup (five minutes, once)

Block the sofa apps

Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, whatever eats your evenings. In Broc they now show the wall instead of the feed.

Add the workout habit, price it high

"Gym session" or "30-minute home workout", worth 30 to 60 minutes of screen time. Custom unlock durations let training pay better than chores, as it should.

Turn on photo verification

Marking the habit done asks for a photo: the gym floor, the rack, your shoes mid-run. The AI checks it matches. Ticking the box from the sofa stops being an option.

Optional: go all-habits-first

In this mode nothing unlocks until the whole day's list is done. Training camp mode; use it in blocks when momentum matters.

Why this sticks where motivation didn't

Motivation is a morning phenomenon; the skipped session happens at 6pm. This setup doesn't need evening motivation, because by 6pm the choice isn't "gym or sofa," it's "gym or a locked phone and a dying streak." The craving to scroll, previously your enemy, now drags you to the gym: it's the only door the feed opens through. Users describe the first week as annoying and the third week as the most consistent training block they've had in years. The streak does the rest; day 15 of visible follow-through is worth protecting.

Common questions

Can't I just photograph the gym without training?

You could drive to the gym, photograph it, and drive home. At that point you're at the gym in your gym clothes having defeated yourself on a technicality; most people just do the workout. The photo isn't a prison, it's a tripwire for self-deception.

Does it work with running or cycling outdoors?

Yes: photo-verify with your route, your shoes, the view. Or use a timer habit for the duration.
