How to stop doomscrolling at night

It's 1am. You're not even enjoying it. You keep scrolling anyway. The fix isn't more willpower, it's making the feed cost something at the hour your willpower clocks off.

Why midnight-you always wins

Late-night scrolling is barely a decision. The pickup is autopilot: the phone is in your hand before any thought happens, and the feed takes it from there. Feeds are built by teams whose job is keeping a tired brain in the loop, and at midnight they're up against nobody. You've been making choices all day. That muscle is done.

This is why every "I'll just stop at 11" plan fails, and why screen-time limits fail with it. The limit fires, the dialog asks nicely, and midnight-you taps "ignore" without reading it. The rule-maker and the rule-breaker are the same person, and only one of them is awake.

Stop trying to out-discipline a slot machine. Change the price of opening it instead.

The night setup

Broc is a habit-based app blocker: block distracting apps, do a real habit, prove it with a photo, earn the unlock. For nights, the trick is aiming the habits at what late-you actually needs:

Block the night-time feeds

TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Reddit, whichever ones own your 11pm. Opening them now shows your habit list instead of the feed.

Set a wind-down habit as the price

"Read 10 pages", "stretch", "tomorrow's to-do list written". If you want to scroll, that's the toll. Half the time, ten pages in, you won't want to anymore.

Keep the unlock window short

A finished habit earns a set chunk of time, then the block comes back. No open-ended "just tonight" exceptions, because the window closes itself.

Stack the physical stuff on top

None of this needs an app: charge the phone across the room, kill notifications after 10, use grayscale. Broc covers the moment those fail, the pickup that happens anyway.

What changes after a week or two

The honest version: the urge to grab the phone doesn't vanish. What changes is what the urge produces. Each pickup hits the block screen, and the block screen offers a trade instead of a feed. Some nights you pay the toll, read the ten pages, scroll your earned window and stop when it ends. Some nights the toll is enough friction that you just go to sleep. Both outcomes beat the 90 minutes you didn't choose.

And the streak grows either way, which is its own trap, the good kind. Day 15 of reading before scrolling is hard to give up over one bad night.

Common questions

Can't I just uninstall it at 1am?

You could. But uninstalling a blocker you set up, and watching a visible streak die, is a real decision. Editing a timer never was. That asymmetry is the entire point.

Is this a sleep or health treatment?

No. Broc is an app blocker with a habit gate, nothing medical. It makes distracting apps harder to open and real habits more rewarding. If sleep is a serious problem, talk to a professional.

What does it cost?
